Kayaking Olowalu

With towering mountainous stretches up above, a rainbow of colorful marine life below, and a canvas of turquoise waters at every angle, Olowalu Beach is anything but ordinary. Think strips of golden sands, a vast reef network, and a list of secret beaches waiting to be uncovered, coming together to make this slice of paradise too-good-to-miss.

Let your mind wander as you sail through crystal-clear waters, indulging in the contrast between leafy landscapes and exotic viewpoints – each as thrilling as the next. It’s what this corner of Maui is known for, as the place where exotic sea life, gentle tides, and first-class backdrops collide.

  • KAYAK OR PADDLE BOARD – You choose!

We may be known for our always-popular kayak rentals in Olowalu, but we like to think of ourselves as the obvious choice for all things water sports. With state-of-the-art tandem kayaks and paddle boards available, we’re bridging the gap between you and your next full-family adventure, where shallow waters and calm conditions make the ultimate paddling hot spot. See for yourself!

    DRAMATIC MARINE LIFE

Grab a snorkel – you’ve got a date with Hawaii’s most exotic marine life. Encircled by manta rays, eagle rays, green sea turtles, and a never-ending stream of tropical fish, as well as the return of humpback whales from December to mid-April, we think of this route as a snapshot of the best of Hawaii’s aquatic life. The reef at Olowalu covers nearly 900 acres-making it the largest intact fringing reef in the state of Hawaii!

And it’s not just a bustling cleaning station for turtles to shake off the algae. As the home of world-class kayak tours in Maui, snap up an unprecedented opportunity to explore Olowalu’s vast reef, home to over 24 types of coral. It’s more than just the setting of your next Instagram shot – it’s part of the local Coral Reef Recovery Plan, restoring habitats, cleaning the oceans, and reeling native fish back to the area.

    PICTURE-PERFECT BACKDROPS

Olowalu Beach is THE location. Paddling to the soundtrack of gentle waves, surrounded by pristine waters, immaculate coastlines, and the rugged West Maui mountains, our kayak rentals in Olowalu take the gold for all-natural views. As a melting-pot of vast vegetation, rocky terrain and soothing shores, this region encapsulates some of the best that Maui has to offer.

Get a front-row seat to the striking Ukumehame Valley. Play ‘Finding Nemo’ at Coral Gardens. Sit back and let the gentle winds blow you to your next destination. Whatever your idea of a day-to-remember is, we’re confident you’ll find it in Olowalu.

    ENJOY YOUR DAY, YOUR WAY

How do you like to unwind? Whether it’s five hours of kayaking, a fun-packed snorkeling adventure, taking in the otherworldly views from atop a paddle board, or putting your feet up while soaking in the rays, we’ve got a little something for all paddlers. With snorkel gear available for hire for the more adventurous among us, and a chair and umbrella available for those who prefer a more slow-paced escape, your next family day starts here.

Kayaking Turtle Town (aka Makena Landing)

Traverse through a series of ancient underwater tunnels, witness the magic of endangered coral, and set your sights on breath-taking volcanic landscapes, with the help of our kayak and paddle board rentals. Brimming with out-of-this-world marine life, from heart-shaped green sea turtles to camouflaging frogfish, we’re giving you a first-class ticket to paradise. Now boarding!

  • WORLD-CLASS MARINE LIFE

Forget about swimming with dolphins. Go kayaking, encircled by a swarm of green sea turtles. Go snorkeling, floating side-by-side with Hawaiian monk seals. And put your feet up at the beach, catching a glimpse at a never-ending slideshow of stingrays, humpback whales, and vibrant schools of fish at every angle. With an eruption of green sea turtles each morning, there’s no turtle-spotting zone quite like this. Psst… it’s nicknamed ‘turtle town’ for a reason!

    GLIDE BENEATH A VOLCANO

While crystal-clear waters, sandy shores, and blue skies are good, there’s something great about kayak tours beneath a volcanic backdrop. Positioned just a hop, skip, and step away from Haleakala, a you’ll-have-to-see-it-to-believe-it dormant volcano in the heart of Maui, this route offers panoramic views of some of Hawaii’s most sacred landscapes. Think an enchanting blend of red rocks, striking waterfalls, and natural craters, illuminating orange during sunrise.

    SNORKELLING ADVENTURES

We think of Makena Landing as an underwater city – and turtles aren’t the only residents. Packed with a network of below-land caves, the product of ancient lava flow, twist and turn through a maze of caverns, grottos, and arches, decorated by coral, while waving ‘hello’ to a vivid stream of sea creatures. And the best part? With state-of-the-art snorkel equipment at our fingertips, witnessing the best of Maui’s aquatic life has never been easier.

    EXPLORE ON YOUR TERMS

We want you to be directed by your wildest imagination. Whether you want to take a closer look at the islands of Molokini and Kaho'olawe, take it slow with regular beach stops, or let your curiosity take hold as you go, you’ll be free to write your own adventure. No guides. No pre-determined tours. Just complete freedom, in the palm of your hands.

    AND RELAX…

Combining gentle waters, a slow-paced atmosphere, and picture-perfect surroundings, Makena Landing doubles as the ultimate relaxation zone. Floating atop a glistening ocean, shoulder-to-shoulder with a remote beach, and below a ceiling of out-of-this-world summits, we recommend this kayak tour to those seeking an escape from the hustle-and-bustle. An ideal starting point for the less-confident group members, you’ll set sail from a small, laidback beach, primarily used by fellow above-water adventurers.

If you’re a sun-chaser, wildlife-lover, or enthusiast of all things otherworldly views, this is THE location. Allowing you to relax, unwind, and take in the jaw-dropping scenery during a private 5-hour rental experience, we think of Makena Landing as a slice of Maui magic, from the captivating marine life to the abundance of underwater formations.
